“Being better at what we do.” How’s that for a trend to follow in 2015. I think it’s the rise of better management tools and techniques that will make the biggest impact in 2015. Whether it’s the balanced score card, strategy map, journey mapping or whatever approach we’ve brought across from the commercial sector, it means we are finally getting done to the hard work of connecting the dots in our organizations. It’s not about kicking another direct mail piece out of the donor but having a thoughtful journey map and back end to truly love, keep and nurture the donors we find.
There are always inspirational books to be found and I’ll thank Kyla Shawyer, the wonderful CEO of the Resource Alliance for getting Good to Great and the Social Sectors by Jim Collins into my hands. It’s a tiny but powerful book on how we get to Great in our sector. For the commercial sector it’s often the same input and output – money – to make a commercial enterprise great. Of course there’s much more than that, but it’s quite true. But for our social sector, it’s the output that is different than the input e.g. money goes into the charity but the transformation of our society to be better is the output. Much more complicated than the commercial sector but there’s one thing that’s the same this year: and that’s using management techniques to make us great – planning tools, reporting tools, etc.
